"Sofastry"

I got a book about the artist Fairfield Porter out of the library and have ben perusing it lately. What an amazing artist!A lot of his work has a real 1940s and 50s vibe to it. I did this painting under his influence. Obviously it falls quite short of his work. But he did inspire me here.

"St. Paul's"

Just some more playing around with watercolors. This is the church I attended growing up. Before I became a recovering Catholic.

"Still Life with Buoy"

Just one of the many vignettes I spotted on the grounds of the place we were staying at in the Bahamas. Many more to come!

"Mack Avenue Sunrise 8/13/22"

When I woke up just before sunrise, the whole sky was this brilliant scarlet color. However, by the time I went down the street to photograph it, it had diminished in intensity somewhat. But it still was pretty spectacular.

"Airport Sunrise 8/15/22"

A week ago I dropped my daughter off at the airport at the crack of dawn. When I pulled up at the terminal, I saw this incredible sunrise. I took a couple of quick snaps, and then painted it.

"Central Woodward Christian"

Another Detroit church. The contrasting colors on the building is due to it being partially cleaned, from what I can tell. Beautiful old church.

"Molly's Sunrise"

As a rule I don't paint from other people's photographs. But when I saw this photo a friend took of a sunrise, I just had to paint it. She usually posts a couple pix a day of that morning's sunrises and I follow her on IG. I'm usually up around dawn, but I'm a couple miles from the lake, so I don't get this great view. Thanks Molly!

"Me and My Shadow"

Actually, it's just my shadow. I was making coffee the other morning and I noticed my shadow against the cupboards in the kitchen. I took a quick snap and then turned it into a sketchy painting.

"Glad Handing"

Saw these glads at my local grocery store and thought they'd make an interesting painting. I love doing flowers. Here I tried loosening up a bit.

"Mack Avenue Sunset" 7/29/22 Looking West

Such overhead drama! This is the second painting from that evening. It's rare that the sky looks so entirely different and paintable at the same time.

"3845 Fort Street"

Here's another one of those beautiful old abandoned bank buildings that are scattered throughout the Greater Detroit area. I need to capture them all in paintings before they all disappear.

"Papyrus, not Platypus"

When you hear the word "papyrus" you think of the Ancient Egyptians. I guess for some reason the actual plant would be long gone as well. But why? They're alive and well, and as weird looking as ever. I found this one walking around he gardens at the Edsel and Eleanor Ford Estate. It is a pretty distinctive looking plant, I must say.

"Mack Avenue Sunset 7/29/22"

Another dramatic sunset. This one was a bt south of the actual sunset, but I loved the orange billowy clouds.

"Ford Playhouse"

This is the children's playhouse on the Edsel and Eleanor Ford Estate. Talk about wretched excess. I can't imagine having that much money! This is another experiment with watercolors.

"Sea Cliff Afternoon"

The house in the Bahamas where we spent five days with our daughter and S-I-L on their honeymoon. Such a beautiful place! The ocean and the skies were just gorgeous! Every day. It truly was/is a tropical paradise!

"Red Tree Over Yonder"

Older folks like me will get the reference in the title of this one. I decided I'd take a stab at a landscape with watercolors. Not sure if this one turned out that great, but it is a learning experience. Isn't that what painting is all about?

"Sue Times Two"

Another experiment with watercolors. Our family's saying is "Try new things", and that's exactly what I'm trying to do. It's fun playing around with a new medium (at least for me).

"If the Cashews Fit..."

  Another one in the series.
