"Zebra Bowl"

 

I never imagined I'd do a painting of a toilet bowl. But there I was one morning, looking down at this dramatic striping scene from the blinds in our bathroom and I thought, "Why Not?" So here it is! And once again, you just never know where you'll find something interesting to paint. 

"Irish Row"

 

I recently watched an excellent Irish film "Run & Jump'. There was a very brief scene of a row of colorful houses. When the movie was over I went back and took a screen grab of the scene. This is a painting I did of it. Ya just never know where an idea will come from for a painting!

"Redbud's Last Gleaming"

 

I love this brief moment when the flowers on the redbud tree have started to fall off and the leave come out. Beautiful contrast of colors. And in the early morning sunlight, it's absolutely dazzling! 

"Hostas Situation"

 

Some Hostas from my garden none in watercolors. If I had to do it over again, I'd make the edges of the leaves a bit more irregular. They look a bit stylized her. I'd also probably skip the yellow and keep the edges white. Oh well! Live and learn.

The Catholic cathedral in Detroit on Woodward Ave. What an impressive structure.

Latest installment of my bird sketch paintings. This time it's a snowy owl. I'd sure hate to be a rat of some other small rodent trying to escape the talons of this nasty creature!

I did this one while listening to some Ravi Shankar. I find music so inspiring. It wakes up the creative forces in me.

I did this painting while listen to the music of L. Subramanian. Obviously it's Indian music--so peaceful and tranquil. I need to do more of this. So inspiring!

I noticed my cat dozing in the window a couple weeks ago. I loved the shadow the bright sun was making and took a quick reference snap. This the the painting I finally got around to doing. 

"P-N-E"

 

Haven't painted any flowers in a while, so I thought I'd have a go at it. Nothing cheers me up like doing a flower. And what could be better in the Spring than a peony? 

"Double Rainbow"

 

It was a dark and stormy night! I just happened to look out our living room window and saw this amazing double rainbow. We went outside and just gawked at it for about 15 minutes. It was absolutely spectacular. After I painted it I realized just how hard it was to make it NOT look like it was a kid's crayon drawing Not really happy with how t turned out. Maybe I'll have better luck next time!

I was a passenger in a car driving around Detroit last week when I spotted this unusual church. I took a quick reference snap out of the front window. This is the painting that resulted from it.

I noticed the cool shadows the stained glass was making in our foyer. Thought it might be fun to paint--so I did this loose, sketchy painting of it.

"Mid-Century Evening"

 

We were invited to a concert at this incredible Mid-Century home. I wandered around a bit a took a few reference photos. This was one of the most striking parts of the home. It was right around sunset after a heavy downpour. I'm not a huge fan of architecture from this era, but this was so striking, I just had to paint it.

I needed to do something fun and loose to paint before I dove into a more detailed one. So I got a good sized sheet of acrylic painting paper and started to doodle. This was totally unplanned and I just started with w red square and went from there. Here's the result. My daughter said it reminded her of a Calder piece. I'll take that!

"American Motors HQ"

 

I recently read about this site being targeted for development. I never knew the old American Motors Corporate Headquarters and factory still existed. It's right in the heart of a Detroit neighborhood! So I finally got around to visiting it. Out in back was a huge pile of rubble and I managed to grab some bricks along with a couple of interesting concrete pieces. 

I've been interested in the watercolor paintings of the artist Richard Hall who I follow on IG. I decided to start exploring this medium and have to thank him for inspiring this style of sketch-painting! It's pretty loose, which fits in with the way I've been painting lately!

"Chestnut (Pink)"

 

Found this beautiful pink variety of a Chestnut tree/flower. They're pretty magnificent.
